No foe can breach

Temples of gold

Gilgamesh of Uruk
Gilgamesh the wild ox

Gilgamesh the perfect
Gilgamesh the king

Who has ravished the wives
and daughters

Of warriors and
Nobles alike

Who has a thirst
no flood can quench

Is this the shepherd
of the flock

Gilgamesh the terror
Gilgamesh the king

Go to the temples
of Anu and Ishtar

Go open
the iron locks

Go pray to
the goddess Aruru

Send a double to this stormy heart
Send a companion with a stormy heart

Sent by the goddess Aruru
Naked as the beasts

over shephards
Who fears no beast
or man

Enkidu of the grasslands
Enkidu of the fields

Enkidu the unshaven
Enkidu the wild

Come to the gates
of the city
Come to the wedding feast

the wild ox
Come challenge the king

Enkidu of the grasslands
Enkidu of the fields

Enkidu the unshaven
Enkidu the beast

----------------
Pt 3 - Stormy Hearts

Gilgamesh and Enkidu
Stormy heart
versus stormy heart

Gilgamesh and Enkidu
The terror and
The beast

------

Two warriors
struggle
At the gates and
In the streets

Gilgamesh undefeated
Gilgamesh at peace

-----

Two foes become companions
The ox and the beast unite

Stormy hearts swear allegiance
And join in one fight

The lady Rimat-Ninsun
Says to her son the king

Enkidu is now your companion
He is no longer a beast

The wild man will not
Forsake you
In this world or the next

This stormy heart will be
your companion
In life as in death

------

In the forest of cedar
In the forest of fear
In the forest a monster
In the forest Huwawa

His face is a lion
His breath is of fire
He is the bringer of floods
He is a creature of terror

Gilgamesh said to Enkidu
I will slay this beast
I will enter Enlil's forest
I will take the trees

Enkidu trembled in fear
As he said to the king
Why must we enter the cedar forest
Why must you do this thing

Huwawa's face is a lion
His breath is of fire
He is the bringer of floods
He is a creature of terror

Gilgamesh said to his friend
A man must do great deeds
A man must cry to the heavens
Prove he is a king

TABLET THREE
(NINSUNS PRAYER)

The lady Wildcow Ninsun
Went to the temple and prayed
Please protect my son
Guard him on his way

Enkidu will lead him through the wild lands
Enkidu I take as a son
Enkidu will lead him to the forest
Enkidu will bring him home

TABLET FOUR
(THE QUEST OF THE CEDAR FOREST)

Gilgamesh and Enkidu
Travelled three days and nights
Through the fields and deserts
To the mountain side

Gilgamesh had three visions
Of a mountain, a bull and a light
Enkidu said these are omens
That we will will our fight

TABLET FIVE
(THE DEFEAT OF HUWAWA)

When they came to the forest
The home of the immortal gods
The two companions trembled
In terror at the sight

Huwawa's face is a lion
His breath is of fire
He is the bringer of floods
He's a creature of terror

Gilgamesh said to Enkidu
Two have more strength than one
Like two boats tied together
No wave can overturn

Be brave my companion
And we will slay this beast
I will take his head
You will take his trees

----

Gilgamesh and Enkidu
Slayed the terrible beast
Gilgamesh took his head
Enkidu the tallest tree

They built a raft to sail on
From the cedar trees
They sailed down the Euphrates
To the city gates

TABLET SIX
(THE BULL OF HEAVEN)

When the goddess Ishtar
Saw Gilgamesh return
She offered him her love
She offered him her charms

But Gilgamesh scorned her
And her treacherous heart
Of her wicked ways
He would have no part

Ishtar cried to her father
The great god Anu
Give me the bull of heaven
To punish the king of Uruk

Ishtar sent the bull of heaven
And the walls of the city shook
One hundred men died
At first sight of the bull

The roar from the bull of heaven
Caused the earth to fold
Another hundred men fell
Into the gaping hole

Gilgamesh said to Enkidu
Two have more strength than one
Like two boats tied together
No wave can overturn

Gilgamesh fought the bull of heaven
Enkidu grabbed its wretched tail
Gilgamesh tore out it's heart
The goddess Ishtar wailed

TABLET SEVEN
(THE DEATH OF ENKIDU)

The gods called a council
And declared that one must die
One must pay the price
For the gods that they defy

Enkidu who was taken from the wild lands
Whom Ninsun took as son
Enkidu who has no father
Enkidu should be the one

Enkidu fell into a fever
And cursed the shepherds and fields
He cursed the lover who gave him
A wound no priest could heal

Shamash said to Enkidu
These things you should not curse
These are gifts that brought you
All the greatness in the world

Enkidu blessed his lover
May she have all silks and gold
Enkidu blessed the shepherds
May their flocks always come home

Enkidu had a vision
Alone in an empty field
A great creature seized him
And dragged him to a place of fear

The house of dust and feathers
The house wear men eat dirt
The house without doors
Or light of any sort

Gilgamesh said to Enkidu
Two have more strength than one
Like two boats tied together
No wave can overturn

Enkidu my companion
Enkidu who took the trees

Enkidu who fought the bull of heaven
Enkidu don't leave

For twelve days Enkidu
Lay on his wasting bed
On the twelfth day Gilgamesh cried
Enkidu the companion is dead

TABLET EIGHT
(GILGAMESH LAMENTS)

Gilgamesh wept for Enkidu
At the gates and in the streets
The walls of Uruk trembled
And his heart knew no peace

Gilgamesh cried to the builders
Build a statue of this man
Build it of copper and gold
In honor of my friend

May the beasts of the fields remember
May the trees of the forest as well
The priest in the temple remember
How the companion fell

May the harlots of the temple remember
May they weep for days
May the mighty Euphrates weep
As it flows on it's way

TABLET NINE
(GILGAMESH IN THE WILD)

Gilgamesh wandered out of Uruk
Into the open fields
He tossed off his robes of silk
Put on a skin of beasts

Gilgamesh cried to the the heavens
Must all men turn to clay
Are all men destined
To suffer this awful fate

There was a man who survived
The worlds greatest flood
With his mind and cunning
He beat and tricked the gods

Upatnishtim dwells
Beyond the farthest shore
He caries the secret of life
Beyond deaths door

Gilgamesh wandered to the mountain
The twin peaks of Mashu
Guarded by scorpion people
Who let no man through

Gilgamesh was no mere man
He was two thirds a god
Gilgamesh entered the darkness
And he cried aloud

Two strong companions
Have more strength than one
Two boats tied together
No wave can overturn

Gilgamesh struggled in darkness
Through twelve terrible leagues
Until he came to the other side
And the shores of the sea

TABLET TEN
(GILGAMESH & URSHANABI)

On the shores of the water
On the shores of the sea
On the shores is a tavern
That veiled Siduri keeps

Siduri spied a man in rags
Siduri locked her doors
Who is this stranger with unkept hair
That grows like an animals fur

It is Gilgamesh of Uruk
Gilgamesh the king
Gilgamesh the unshaven
Gilgamesh who grieves

I've come to find the far one
The one who escaped the flood
The one who lives forever
The one who built the boat

Upatnishtim lives
Across the waters of death
Urshanabi is the only one
Who knows the way to that land

Gilgamesh found Urshanabi
Protected by giants of stone
Gilgamesh destroyed them
And faced Urshanabi alone

The ferryman said to the king
Bring me sixty trees
Then go to the forest
And bring me sixty more

You will fashion punting poles
To oar my ferry boat
We will cross the waters of death
To the farthest shore

TABLET ELEVEN
(GILGAMESH & UTNAPISHTUM)

Utnapnishtum watched
As the ferryman came ashore
Who is this stranger with unkept hair
That grows like an animals fur

It is Gilgamesh of Uruk
Gilgamesh the king
Gilgamesh the unshaven
Gilgamesh who grieves

Gilgamesh who has travelled
Across the deserts and seas
The one who lost his companion
And now can find no peace

Tell me how to defeat death
Tell me the secret of life
Tell me great ancestor
How to stay alive

Utnapnishtum stared
At the disheveled king
And offered up a story
Of ancient and secret things

-------

The gods had met in council
And decided the fate of men
They decided to send a flood
To wipe clean the land

But the great god Ea
Whispered through the walls of reed
Utnapnishtum build a boat
This city you must leave

Utnapnishtum built a boat
Loaded with beasts and birds
He gave away his processions
As the sound of thunder was heard

The sky broke open and flooded the land
The wrath of the gods had come
All living things perished
Save those on that boat

When the floods receded
The gods stood aghast
Their judgement had been hasty
The vengeance had been vast

Utnapishtum they welcomed
To eternal life
To live in the faraway land
To set the balance right

----------

Utnapnishtum said
To the ragged king
Why should you live forever
You are already a king

The life of a man is short
An you have done great deeds
You are two thirds a god
What else more do you need?

Return to your city
Return and take your throne
Return to walls of Uruk
Return to your home

Gilgamesh said to the faraway one
Gilgamesh begged him please
I have travelled deserts and fields
And across the deadly sea

Utnapnishtum said
In the sea is a plant
If you can find it
It will make you a younger man

Gilgamesh dived in the water
And found the secret plant
He swam to the surface
And boarded the ferryman's raft

They sailed across the waters of death
They sailed back to dry land
As Gilgamesh stepped ashore
He dropped the secret plant

A serpent came up and took it
Stole the secret of youth
Gilgamesh returned empty handed
To the gates of Uruk

Measure the walls of the city
See it's cedar gate
See it's shining temples
Remember all mens fate
